在形態學，過往绿尾大蚕蛾都被認為只是南亞長尾水青蛾的一個亞種，直到最近[1][2]，並在Ylla et at. (2005)認為是一個物種。

在香港，绿尾大蚕蛾被發現在樟樹（Cinnamomum camphora）[5]、楓香（Liquidambar formosana）[6]、木槿、烏桕（Sapium sebiferum）及垂柳[7]上生活。
